How to Migrate Your Store to Shopware 6 Without Losing SEO Rankings

A practical checklist for eCommerce store owners and developers planning a platform migration — covering redirects, structured data, and Core Web Vitals.

Migrating an eCommerce platform is one of the highest-risk technical projects a business can undertake. A poorly executed migration can wipe out years of SEO equity overnight. This guide walks through the steps FFP Technologies follows to ensure our clients keep their rankings intact.

1. Audit Your Current URL Structure

Before anything moves, document every URL that ranks in Google Search Console. Export your top-performing pages, product URLs, category URLs, and any URLs with backlinks. These are the assets you are protecting.

2. Map Every URL to Its New Destination

Create a redirect map as a spreadsheet: old URL → new URL. If the slug structure changes (e.g. /de/produkte/ becomes /products/), every old URL needs a 301 redirect to the correct new destination. Redirect chains kill crawl budget — map directly from old to new.

3. Implement 301 Redirects Before Go-Live

In Shopware 6, you can manage redirects via the SEO URL module or via your web server (nginx/Apache). We recommend configuring nginx-level redirects for performance. Test every redirect before launch using a crawler like Screaming Frog.

4. Carry Over Structured Data

If your old store had product schema, breadcrumb schema, or review schema — replicate it in Shopware. Missing structured data can cause rich results to disappear from Google, reducing click-through rates even if rankings hold.

5. Core Web Vitals: Do Not Regress

Measure your old store's Core Web Vitals in PageSpeed Insights before migration. After launch, run the same tests immediately. LCP, CLS, and INP regressions will signal to Google that the new version performs worse, potentially triggering ranking drops weeks later.

6. Submit the New Sitemap Immediately

As soon as the new Shopware store is live, submit the updated sitemap.xml to Google Search Console. Request indexing of your top-priority pages manually to accelerate recrawling.

Summary

A Shopware migration done right protects your organic traffic, redirects authority from old URLs to new ones, and maintains the technical signals Google uses to rank your pages. If you are planning a migration and want a technical partner who has done this before — talk to FFP Technologies.
